Cal Sailing Club is an all-volunteer sailing and windsurfing cooperative at the Berkeley Marina, and several times each season it throws its doors open to the public. At the Open House on Sunday 30 August 2026, anyone can get a free introductory sailboat ride on San Francisco Bay aboard the club's keelboats and dinghies, no booking, no charge. Sign up in front of the clubhouse at 124 University Avenue between 1:00 and 2:30 pm; rides run from 1:00 to about 3:00, first come, first served, and can end early if conditions or crowds demand it. Children are welcome from age five, accompanied by an adult. The point of the day is recruitment as much as generosity, since the club keeps membership cheap by running everything with volunteer labour, and plenty of members first arrived as walk-ups at an open house. Summer afternoons on the Berkeley shore are reliably windy, so dress warmly.
