Kapproður, Faroese rowing in traditional wooden boats, is the national sport of the Faroe Islands, and its season builds through the summer to one date: July 28 in Tórshavn, the eve of Ólavsøka. The finals are the centrepiece of the national festival, rowed in the harbour in front of packed quays. The boats are direct descendants of the old Faroese fishing craft, raced in fixed classes by crew size. Children under 15 row 500 metres, youth crews 1,000 metres, and adult men compete in 6-, 8- and 10-oared boats over distances up to 2,000 metres elsewhere in the islands, though in Tórshavn no race exceeds 1,000 metres. Rowing clubs from villages across the Faroes qualify through regattas held from early June onward. Winning at Ólavsøka carries real weight here. The rest of the festival, with chain dancing, music and the national holiday on July 29, surrounds the racing.
