24 August is Saint Bartholomew's day, the feast of the patron saint who gave the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthelemy its name, and Gustavia treats it as the main public celebration of the year. The day opens with an official ceremony and wreath-laying, followed by a religious procession through the little Swedish-built capital. Then the harbour takes over: traditional boat races and regattas inside Gustavia harbour, music from local bands, beach games and a reception hosted by the Collectivite de Saint-Barthelemy. The evening ends with dancing and a fireworks display over the water at the Quai du General-de-Gaulle. August is low season on St Barts, so the crowd is mostly locals rather than winter visitors, which changes the character of the whole thing for the better. If you are on the island in late August, this is the one fixed date worth planning around.
