Crimson Gilt is an installation by visual artist Vincent Ruijters, opening at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the Dutch National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, on 17 September 2026 and on view until 21 March 2027. The work is a walk-through illusion of the East Indiaman Amsterdam, the 18th-century VOC ship whose replica is moored beside the museum, built from more than a thousand knitted strips of cotton and polyester on bamboo, nearly eight metres long. The palette carries the argument: gold for trade and prosperity, crimson for colonialism and exploitation, woven into a single object that refuses to separate the two. Amsterdam is the third port on the work's route. It was first shown in Hirado, Japan, then at Museum Bahari, the maritime museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, and at each stop the installation is reshaped to answer that port's own history. Seeing it next to the actual replica ship gives the Amsterdam showing extra bite.
