European Heritage Days is the Council of Europe's annual programme of free access to cultural sites, running across 50 countries each autumn since 1985. The shared European theme for 2026 is heritage at risk, focused on preserving places and traditions under threat. For anyone interested in the sea, the weekend of 19 and 20 September is when much of Western Europe takes part, with maritime museums, lighthouses, shipyards, historic vessels and working harbours opening their doors for free or running special tours. Many of these sites are normally closed to the public or charge admission, so this is the one weekend a year to climb a lighthouse or board a preserved sailing ship without a ticket. Each country runs its own programme under the shared banner, and exact dates vary by nation between August and November. National websites list the local events, searchable by region and by type of site.
