Heritage Open Days 2026 England

Date: 11 September 2026

Location: Heritage sites across England, Multiple, United Kingdom

Organizer: National Trust / Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days is England's largest heritage festival, and the 2026 edition runs for ten days from 11 to 20 September. Thousands of sites across the country open their doors for free, many of them normally closed to the public or charging admission. The 2026 theme is Everyday Histories, focused on the working lives of ordinary people. For anyone interested in maritime history the festival is quietly excellent: past programmes have included lighthouses, historic vessels, boatyards, docks and maritime museums, and coastal towns often build whole local programmes around their seafaring past. Events range from guided walks and building tours to short talks and hands-on workshops, all run by local organisers and volunteers, coordinated nationally by the National Trust. Nothing is ticketed centrally, so it pays to search the official listings by area once they go live in late summer. Some popular openings require booking; most are simply turn up and walk in.
