Roscoff's onion festival honours the Johnnies, the local growers who from the nineteenth century sailed their pink onions across the Channel and sold them door to door in Britain, strings hung from bicycles. The onion now has AOP protected status and its own festival each August. The 2026 edition runs 22 and 23 August. The Village des Johnnies hosts onion sales, local producers, an exhibition on the Hilda shipwreck and a public attempt at a world record for the longest onion braid, measured on the Saturday afternoon after a young braiders' competition. Saturday evening brings communal meals under the big tent from 6.30pm, organised by the Paotred Rosko. On Sunday a bike ride follows the onion route from the tourist office at 8am, and the Confrerie de l'Oignon parades through the streets at 11am. It is a food festival with a genuine maritime story underneath it.
