Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem Sesimbra

Date: 14 August 2026

Location: Portugal

Organizer: Apostolado do Mar Sesimbra

Sesimbra, a fishing town south of Lisbon, honours Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, Our Lady of the Good Voyage, each August on the eve of the Assumption. The feast is organised by the Apostolado do Mar, the parish Apostleship of the Sea group, and is built around the town's fishing community rather than tourism. The image of the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets and along the seafront, accompanied by the Sesimbra choir and the local band, and the Assumption Mass the next day includes a blessing for seafarers and their families. One distinctive element is a giant rosary prayed by more than fifty people tied to the maritime trades; another is the place given to fado in the programme. The devotion itself is old in Sesimbra, though this festival format dates back less than a decade. It is a religious event first. Visitors are welcome, but the fishermen set the tone.
