Sail Newport Halloween Howl 2026

Date: 23 October 2026 – 25 October 2026

Location: Sail Newport, Newport, United States

Organizer: Sail Newport

The Halloween Howl is Sail Newport's last youth regatta of the season, the self-described Last Blast before boats are packed away for the New England winter. It typically draws over 100 boats to Narragansett Bay, with Optimists racing in Red, White and Blue divisions alongside Club 420s, and sailors traveling in from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. Late October in Newport means cold water, shifty breeze and sometimes real wind, so finishing the event is a small badge of honor for junior sailors. The costume element is not a gimmick: race committee and competitors sail in Halloween costumes, and there is a shoreside costume contest after racing. The 2026 edition is scheduled for the weekend of 24-25 October, with boat drop-off on Friday 23 October. Racing runs Saturday and Sunday with awards to close it out. It is a friendly, slightly chaotic way to end the youth season.
