Les Journees Europeennes du Patrimoine are France's edition of European Heritage Days, held on 19 and 20 September 2026, the 43rd time the country has run the weekend. Thousands of public and private sites open for free or at reduced prices, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture. The 2026 themes are photography heritage, marking two hundred years since the invention of photography, and the shared European theme of heritage at risk. For sailors and maritime history fans the weekend is generous. The Musee national de la Marine opens its sites in Paris, Brest, Port-Louis, Rochefort and Toulon, and ports around the coast open historic vessels, lighthouses and naval buildings that are otherwise off limits. Some of the best visits are the small ones, a lifeboat station or a working boatyard rather than a famous museum. Programmes appear on the ministry's dedicated website in the weeks before the event, searchable by town and region.
