Greenport's Maritime Festival nearly died. After 35 years the East End Seaport Museum announced in late 2025 that it could no longer run the event, and for a while the 2026 edition was off. A new group, the Greenport Business Owners Alliance, then took it on, and the festival returns from 25 to 27 September 2026, opening with the Land and Sea Gala on the Friday and running village-wide through the weekend. The setting is the North Fork of Long Island: Mitchell Park, the marina and the surrounding streets of a village that still has working boatyards and an oyster fleet. Legacy events survive the handover, including the Snapper Derby and the cardboard boat races, alongside food, music, local makers and on-water activity in the harbour. It is a community festival first and a tourist attraction second, which is exactly why it is worth the trip out from the city.
