Safety Bay Yacht Club
Location: Penguin Road, Safety Bay, WA, Australia
Safety Bay Yacht Club was founded in 1947 on the Safety Bay foreshore south of Perth and is the oldest yacht club in its district. Early members made do with a Nissen hut near the water's edge that flooded regularly and doubled as a post-war school classroom. Community fundraising paid for the present clubrooms, built in the early 1960s on a peppercorn lease from the former Shire of Rockingham. The club specialises in off the beach classes on waters less than three kilometres from Penguin Island, and also caters for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Reliable summer sea breezes make it one of the safest places in Western Australia to learn to sail, and regattas here have drawn fleets of more than 120 boats.
