Western Australian Maritime Museum
Location: Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
The Western Australian Maritime Museum stands on Victoria Quay at the mouth of the Swan River in Fremantle, its sail-shaped building opened in 2002 overlooking the harbour entrance. Pride of place goes to Australia II, the winged-keel twelve metre that took the America's Cup from the New York Yacht Club in 1983, displayed alongside galleries on the Indian Ocean, Fremantle's fishing fleet, pearling and naval defence. Moored on the slipway outside is the Oberon-class submarine HMAS Ovens, open for guided tours. The museum is part of the WA Museum group, which also runs the separate Shipwrecks Museum in a 1850s commissariat building nearby in Fremantle's West End.
