Izuhara Port Festival (Tsushima)
Date: 1 August 2026 – 2 August 2026
Location: Izuhara Port, Izuhara, Tsushima, Japan
Organizer: Tsushima City
The Izuhara Port Festival is the main summer event on Tsushima, the Japanese island that sits in the strait between Kyushu and Korea. It has been held since 1964 on the first weekend of August at Izuhara Port, which for centuries was Japan's front door for official contact with Korea. That history drives the festival's best-known feature: a costumed re-enactment of the Joseon Tongsinsa procession, the diplomatic missions sent by the Korean court to Edo-period Japan, staged here since 1980 with participants from Busan taking part in the parade. On the water there is the Funaguro, a traditional boat race rowed in the harbour, and the weekend rounds out with fireworks and food stalls along the quay. In 2026 the festival falls on 1 and 2 August. It is a small-town festival in scale, but the Japan-Korea exchange at its core makes it unlike any other port matsuri in the country.
