Festa de la Sal

Date: 19 September 2026 – 21 September 2026

Location: Spain

Organizer: Museu de l'Anxova i la Sal

The Festa de la Sal is a historical recreation on the beach of the old port of L'Escala, a fishing town on Catalonia's Costa Brava. Held every year on the third Saturday of September, it commemorates the trade that built the town: catching anchovies and preserving them in salt. Locals in period dress re-enact the work of fishermen and salters on the sand, and the day includes havaneres and tavern songs, craft workshops, traditional dances and a seafood breakfast on the beach. The festival is organised by the town's historical archive together with the Museu de l'Anxova i la Sal, the anchovy and salt museum opened in 2006, which holds an open day during the event. Guided tours run at Can Cinto Xua, a preserved fishermen's house. In 2015 the festival entered Catalonia's official catalogue of heritage festivals. The 2026 edition falls on 19 September. It is free, local and genuinely about salt.
