Gladstone Yacht Club

Location: Goondoon Street, Gladstone, QLD, Australia

Gladstone Yacht Club, formally the Port Curtis Sailing Club, was formed in April 1941 and renamed in 1947. Its clubhouse at 1 Goondoon Street stands on piles driven through reclaimed land beside Auckland Creek, built largely by volunteer labour between 1949 and 1959 with timber from trees felled in a 1949 cyclone, and is now on the Queensland Heritage Register. The club helped establish the 308 nautical mile Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, first sailed at Easter 1949 and still finishing on its doorstep each year. Junior sailing dates from a fleet of Sabots bought in 1961, and accredited Start Sailing courses run today for children and adults.
