Derwent Sailing Squadron
Location: 23 Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay, TAS, Australia
The Derwent Sailing Squadron dates from 15 February 1906, when a group of Hobart yachtsmen convened a new club under the name Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania. Renamed in the 1920s as sail took precedence, the Squadron moved to Marieville Esplanade at Sandy Bay in 1953, where members financed and built clubrooms at Cheverton's Jetty, and a permanent clubhouse followed in 1965. Its marina has grown in stages: the 102-berth Graham Blackwood Marina opened in 1985 and the Roy Barkas extension of 2015 added a modern 150-berth floating facility. That lifted capacity to 277 vessels, the largest of any club in Tasmania, and the Squadron remains one of Hobart's principal sailing clubs on the River Derwent.
