The Ocean Race, the fully crewed round-the-world race first sailed in 1973 as the Whitbread, stops in St. Pete-Clearwater, Florida from 4 to 16 May 2027. It is the third stopover of the 15th edition and the first time in the race's 54-year history that the Florida Gulf Coast hosts a leg departure. The IMOCA fleet arrives after rounding Cape Horn and racing up through the Americas, then docks in a public race village where visitors can see the 60-foot foiling boats up close and meet the crews. The headline act comes at the restart: a brand new transatlantic leg of roughly 4,500 nautical miles from St. Pete-Clearwater to Cascais, Portugal, the first Ocean Race transatlantic ever started from the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa Bay has a strong sailing scene of its own, so expect a busy stopover. From Cascais the race continues to its finale at AMAALA on the Red Sea.
