The Molokai Hoe is the world championship of men's long-distance outrigger canoe racing, run almost every October since 1952. Crews paddle 41 miles across the Kaiwi Channel from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Waikiki on Oahu, hours of grinding work through open-ocean swell between the islands. The 2026 race is set for October 11 and marks the 73rd crossing. It is organized by the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, with the field capped at 125 crews and paddlers coming from Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, Brazil and beyond. Lead canoes typically finish off Duke Kahanamoku Beach in the early afternoon after around five hours at sea, and watching them come past Diamond Head into Waikiki costs nothing; the finish is walkable from most west-end Waikiki hotels. Few events in Pacific watersports carry this much history, and none carries more cultural weight in Hawaii.
