Laamafaru Festival 2026 – Laamu Atoll

The Laamafaru Festival, meaning Laamu's Reefs Festival in Dhivehi, is an annual marine conservation event in Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives. It began in 2016 as the Laamu Turtle Festival, a community day organized by the Maldives Underwater Initiative, the marine biology team based at Six Senses Laamu. In 2019 local stakeholders voted to widen the focus from turtles to the atoll's whole marine ecosystem, under the theme Our Ocean, Safe and Protected. Attendance grew from about 500 people at the first edition to more than 1,500, drawing schools and communities from islands across the atoll. The activities are hands-on: educational stalls on coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves, sand sculpture and plastic upcycling competitions, student debates, swim races and beach cleanups. Laamu Atoll is a Mission Blue Hope Spot with a network of marine protected areas, and the festival is the community side of that protection work.
