Laamafaru Festival
Date: 15 November 2026 – 30 November 2026
Location: Maldives
Organizer: Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) by Six Senses Laamu
The Laamafaru Festival is a community ocean-conservation festival in Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives, organised by the Maldives Underwater Initiative, the marine team at Six Senses Laamu working with the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and the Olive Ridley Project. It began in 2016 as an atoll-wide turtle festival with around 500 attendees. In 2019 the scope widened and the event took its current name, Laamafaru, meaning Laamu's reefs in Dhivehi, under the theme 'Our Ocean - Safe and Protected'. The festival brings together students from all thirteen schools in the atoll for marine education and events built around a conservation theme; the 2021 edition involved 1,865 students across eight island festivals. Laamu Atoll is a recognised Mission Blue Hope Spot, and the festival has become the most visible piece of the atoll's community conservation work. It is a local event first, though guests at Six Senses Laamu can take part.
