The Can Tho Open Sailing Regatta is a young event with a specific job: introducing sailing to the Mekong Delta. Can Tho is the delta's largest city, built around river commerce and floating markets rather than coastal sailing, and the regatta is staged at the end of December as part of the Can Tho River Culture Festival. The 2025 edition, held on 29 December, drew eight teams and sixteen athletes from provinces and cities across Vietnam, racing to an international-standard format on the city's river frontage. The municipal People's Committee backs the event as both a sport development project and a way of putting the delta's waterways in front of domestic and international visitors. Sailing is a small sport in Vietnam and events like this are how it grows. The year-end slot alongside the river festival is the established pattern, with the next edition expected in late December.
