Indochina Junk

Location: Long Tiên, Phường Hồng Gai, 01000, Việt Nam, Ha Long City, Vietnam

Operating traditional wooden junks on Ha Long Bay since 1991 — with Quang Ninh authorities planning to phase out all wooden junks by 2030 — these are among the last authentic wooden vessels sailing the UNESCO World Heritage seascape before steel construction is mandated

Quang Ninh Province has announced that all wooden junks will be phased out of Ha Long Bay by 2030, replaced by steel vessels that meet modern safety codes. Indochina Junk has been sailing traditional wooden vessels on this UNESCO World Heritage seascape since 1991 — longer than any other operator. The wooden junk is not merely a tourist prop: it is the design that Vietnamese fishermen perfected over centuries for these specific waters, with their specific tides, winds and karst geography. When the 2030 deadline passes, this era ends. Indochina Junk currently offers some of the last opportunities to sleep on a wooden vessel in Ha Long Bay before regulation closes that chapter permanently.
