Built at Galmpton on the River Dart in 1924, the Provident was one of the last sailing trawlers ever built — the moment when working sail gave way to engine power in Britain's fishing industry. She is now on the National Historic Fleet, carries just 8 guests, and sails the Inner and Outer Hebrides from Oban and Mallaig. There are no winches to help hoist the sails: every rope is raised by hand, which means every guest is crew. The Hebrides themselves carry Norse place-names and a maritime culture that predates recorded history. Sailing them on a 100-year-old hull that earned its living hauling fish is an act of temporal compression that very few experiences can match.
