Classic Sailing — Provident / Eda Frandsen, Hebrides
Location: Soroba Road, Oban, PA34 4HU, United Kingdom, Oban / Isle of Mull, United Kingdom
The Eda Frandsen — a 75-year-old restored gaff cutter sailing the Inner Hebrides — combines Norse-descended island culture with traditional working sails hoisted entirely by hand (no winches) on a vessel older than Scottish devolution
The Eda Frandsen is 75 years old, a gaff cutter — a rig so old that the knowledge required to maintain and sail it had almost disappeared from British waters. Classic Sailing operates her in the Inner Hebrides: islands named in Old Norse by the same maritime culture that settled Iceland, Greenland and North America a thousand years ago. There are no winches on board. Every sail is hoisted by the combined effort of the guests, which means that on an Eda Frandsen voyage, understanding the boat is not optional — it is the condition of the experience. This is the closest thing in Europe to genuinely traditional offshore sailing.
