Tongyeong Hansan Great Battle Festival 2026

Date: 12 August 2026 – 16 August 2026

Location: Tongyeong harbour, Tongyeong, South Korea

Organizer: Tongyeong City / Hansan Daecheop Commemoration Service Committee

The Hansan Great Battle Festival remembers one of the most famous naval victories in Korean history. In 1592 Admiral Yi Sun-sin's fleet defeated a Japanese force off Hansando Island using the crane wing formation, and Tongyeong has commemorated it every summer for decades. The centerpiece is a reenactment on the water: a turtle ship and local fishing boats line up off Hansan in the crane wing shape, then Joseon and Japanese vessels face each other with cannon fire and fireworks, closer to a film set than a parade. On land there is a reenacted naval inspection ceremony and march, plus parades, traditional performances and food stalls around the harbour. Tongyeong, on the south coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, is a fishing port with a strong claim to being the home of the Joseon navy, and the festival takes over much of the waterfront. It usually runs for around five days in mid-August.
