Síldarævintýrið á Siglufirði

Síldarævintýrið, the Herring Adventure, is the summer festival of Siglufjörður, the fjord town at the northern tip of Iceland that was once the centre of the country's herring industry. Held annually over the Verslunarmannahelgin long weekend at the start of August, it celebrates the boom years when hundreds of boats landed herring here and 'herring girls' salted the catch on the piers. The award-winning Herring Era Museum, housed in original salting-station buildings on the waterfront, is the festival's anchor, with costumed salting demonstrations and theatrical performances recreating the work. Around it the town puts on live music in the square, a herring buffet, accordion and folk music sessions linked to the local Folk Music Centre, and family events, closing with fireworks over the fjord on Sunday evening. Siglufjörður is a five-hour drive from Reykjavík, which keeps the crowd manageable. The setting, a narrow fjord walled by steep mountains, does a lot of the work.
