Hydra Regatta

The Hydra race is a fixture of the Greek offshore calendar, organised by the Nautical Club of Greece and sailed every year at the end of October, around the national holiday of 28 October. The course is simple: start off Faliro near Piraeus, race 36 nautical miles across the Saronic Gulf to Hydra, then race the same 36 miles back. Boats enter under ORCi, IRC and ORC Club ratings, and the event runs with the support of the Municipality of Hydra and the island's own nautical club. The stopover is the real draw. Hydra's harbour is car-free and tightly packed, so a fleet of race boats rafted along the quay takes over the whole waterfront, and crews spend the night ashore before the return leg. For many Athens-based sailors this is the last proper offshore weekend before winter. A separate spring race to Hydra, the Greek Revolution Regatta, is run by POIATH in March.
