The Noorderlicht was built in 1910. She has been exploring Svalbard since 1994. She sleeps 12 guests and carries them into fjords where Dutch whalers hunted bowhead whales to the point of regional extinction in the 17th century — the same fjords where those whale populations are now slowly recovering, and where polar bears outnumber the permanent human population. The vessel's 115-year age is the point: she pre-dates the environmental destruction she now witnesses the reversal of. The Venturesail expeditions follow the "whalers' footsteps" itinerary deliberately, turning maritime history into a conservation narrative.
