The village of Tana Beru in South Sulawesi is one of the only places on Earth where large ocean-going wooden sailing ships are still built without a single written plan. Bugis master builders carry the entire vessel — its proportions, its bend, its ceremony — in their heads, passing it through apprenticeship and family memory. Building begins with prayer and ritual; the first timber is laid according to tradition. The vessels that emerge from this process are the phinisi, and they sail through some of the world's most biodiverse waters: Komodo National Park, the Banda Sea, Raja Ampat. The UNESCO inscription of 2017 acknowledged that this tradition is globally irreplaceable. Charter a phinisi and you are sleeping inside a living act of intangible heritage.
