Captain Bakari sails a 75-foot Omani dhow — once a working vessel of the Indian Ocean trade — through the waters of the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya's UNESCO World Heritage site and its oldest continuously inhabited town, where families trace the origins of their homes to the 13th century. The vessel has been repurposed for small-group ocean exploration, sleeping up to eight guests across three cabins, and ventures into mangrove channels and remote islands that larger boats cannot reach. What distinguishes NaiSabah is not luxury but lineage: the Lamu Archipelago is where the monsoon-dependent dhow culture that connected Arabia, India and East Africa was born, and sailing it on a traditional Omani hull is the closest available approximation to those original voyages.
