Most Arctic sailing vessels are purpose-built for comfort and then adapted for ice. Arctica II was built for ice first — 6mm steel hull, 80mm foam insulation, central water heating, polar-bear-proof construction — and has been based permanently in Longyearbyen since the company was founded in 2003. This means Arctica II can operate when other vessels have left for the season, and can reach areas that lighter-built boats cannot safely enter. For a small group of eight to ten people, chartering Arctica II means entering the High Arctic not as expedition tourists but as a genuine expedition team.
